Monthly and rolling rentals

How storage rentals are measured in months, what a rolling rental is, and how to stop one.

Storage rentals are measured in months

Storage is rented in whole months. You choose a number of months, the rental starts the moment the payment goes through, and the end date follows from them.

The end date falls on the same day of the month on which you started. If you started on the 31st and the target month is shorter, the end falls on the last day of that month, and the month after it returns to the 31st.

The host sets a minimum number of months, and sometimes a maximum. A booking shorter than the minimum or longer than the maximum is stopped with a message.

A monthly rental needs no approval either. There is no request sent to the host and no answer to wait for.

Parking is not measured in months, so these options do not appear on parking listings.

What a rolling rental is

A rolling rental is a storage rental with no end date set in advance. The rental continues month to month until one of the two sides stops it.

The option exists for storage only, and only on listings where the host allowed a renewing rental. If the box does not appear in the booking form, the host did not allow it on that listing.

In practice your end date moves one month further towards the close of each month, as long as the rental continues. If the rental is stopped, the date stays where it is.

This is a monthly subscription: the price is per month, and each month is charged separately until you cancel the subscription from "My rentals". The option is not offered yet; this is how it will work when it is available.

A renewing rental needs no approval either, like any other booking.

What a rolling rental is

Minimum and maximum months

The host sets the minimum number of months for the rental. The opening term of every booking must meet that minimum, in a rolling rental too.

The maximum works differently. It applies to a rental with an agreed end date, and it does not apply to a rolling rental.

The reason is simple: a maximum is a ceiling on a term both sides agreed in advance, and a rolling rental has no such term. A host who wants a ceiling does not allow a rolling rental on the listing.

In a rolling rental the number of months grows over time. The minimum is checked once, when the booking is created, and it is not checked again at each renewal.

Stopping the renewal is not cancelling

When you stop the renewal, the rental does not end at that moment. The paid month runs to its end, and the space stays yours until then. There is no refund for the current month.

After the current end date the rental simply does not renew again. Nothing further is required of you.

Either side can stop the renewal, the renter and the host alike. It is done from the rentals page.

Pressing stop a second time changes nothing, and does not move the date the first press settled.

If you want to finish earlier, that is a cancellation rather than stopping the renewal, and it is subject to the cancellation policy.

A rolling rental holds the future too

A storage unit under an active rolling rental is not available to anyone else, not only for the current month but for every future date.

The reason is that the renewal must have somewhere to go. If somebody booked the month after yours, your renewal would collide with them and you would lose the space to a calendar.

Anyone trying to book such a unit sees a message that the unit is under a rolling rental and is not available for that date.

The rule applies to a renewing rental that has not been stopped. One whose renewal was stopped releases the future, and the months after the end of the term become available again.

Paying for a monthly rental

You pay by card, inside Peelpel, when you book. The rental starts the moment the payment goes through, and prices include VAT.

For a fixed-term rental, the amount shown in the summary covers all the months you chose. For a renewing subscription the price per month is shown, and each month is charged separately.

Every further month is at the same tariff published on the listing. The amount per month does not change by itself.

On a renewing subscription, if a month's charge fails, the storage space is held for you for 3 days. If the payment is not completed by then, the rental ends. There is no need to agree payment with the host.
